Consider the power of adding one simple word to the end of what you tell yourself…the word YET.
Think of something that you don’t know how to do and state it to yourself. For example “I don’t know how to cook healthy food at home”. Now add the word “YET” to the end of it: “I don’t know how to cook healthy food at home…yet”. By adding the word “yet”, you give yourself permission to believe that you can get to your goal, even if you are not there today. Reframing the situation allows you to see that there is room to learn and grow, no matter what your age or circumstances. It may be challenging to do so at first, but with time and practice, you can master this mindset change.
Think of something you have mastered, like riding a bike or learning to drive a car. What did it take to get you to the point where you are now with that skill or ability? How much did you have to practice? Keep this in mind as you learn new skills or work towards a goal. New behaviors take time and practice.
Other questions to ask yourself to help create a growth mindset:
A growth mindset is important for all aspects of your life, including your desire to lose weight and be healthy. Reframing your life by changing your mindset can allow you to see the big picture, have compassion for yourself, expand your opportunity to learn and grow and allow you to become a more resilient person. Someone with a growth mindset may be more likely to achieve their goals.
Try it out and see how powerful this mental shift can be in your life. See what happens today when you add the word YET.
