When was the last time you really took the time to kick back and play?
When was the last time you did something for yourself just for FUN?
As a society we tend to view play as important for children, but not for adults for whom it is viewed as a waste of time when there are so many other important things to do. But there is real value in allowing yourself to be carefree and to enjoy your life. Playing is fun and can relieve stress, it can bring you closer to your friends and family and nurture a feeling of connection, and it can keep your mind and attitude young.
Do you know a playful attitude can also help you in your weight loss journey? As a health coach, I see the “aha” moment when a client recognizes the attitude or thoughts they have been telling themselves about nutrition, exercise and other aspects of their life. The lightbulb goes off when they realize they have been looking at exercise as a chore or nutrition as “diet” food instead of finding a playful attitude about the things they want to incorporate in their healthy lifestyle.
A playful attitude for exercise may enrich your experience and also tap into internal motivation. Do you like to dance? Do you like to challenge yourself physically in a workout which you didn’t think you could first accomplish? What is the fun factor for you? Learning to play and moving your body can be a “win-win” situation. Playing can mean something different to each person.
A playful attitude for your daily food may be experimenting with new ways to cook or new veggies you have never eaten before. Have fun with themed dinners or a new cooking device or tool in the kitchen. If you have kids, renaming foods like calling broccoli “trees” or bananas “ba-noo-noos”, using cookie cutters or making pictures out of snacks can add a fun factor and bring smiles to meal time. Spices also can add variety and fun to your meals.
Play can go beyond diet and exercise. What do you do for a hobby or interest? Do you have an activity where you feel energized or get into a sense of “flow” when all time and space disappear? Do you have something you do for no other reason than because you enjoy it? When was the last time you danced or sang out loud to a song on the radio or played in the sand at the beach or rode your bike through the park, with no destination in mind? These things make us feel good and glad to be alive. A playful attitude can mean a mind-body connection where you find a deeper sense of wellness and happiness in your life.
I challenge you to make time for adventure and fun. What activity will you do this week just because you enjoy it? What is something you’ve always wanted to try? How can you embrace a playful attitude in your every day life?
