Have you ever wondered why so many people struggle with their weight today, when a few generations ago most people didn’t? The photo above is of my grandmother, her parents, and her siblings when they were young. She is bottom middle (isn’t she beautiful?) No one in her family was overweight and it was uncommon for any young person to be overweight at that time. In 1970 only 5% of children in the US were obese while today 18% are. Adult obesity rates have similarly increased from 13% in 1970 to 37% today. This is such a dramatic change in just a few generations. Let’s look at what our grandparents did that was so different to what we do today.
Our diet has changed dramatically since the 1960s and 1970s. Today we eat on average 20% more calories every day than we did in 1970! Is it any wonder that we weigh more?
How can we be more like our grandparents?
